Whether you're training for your first 5K or aiming to qualify for the Boston Marathon, understanding your running pace is the key to reaching your goals.
What Is Running Pace?
Running pace is the time it takes you to cover a fixed distance, usually expressed as minutes per mile or minutes per kilometer. Unlike speed (distance per hour), pace is more intuitive for runners because lower numbers mean faster running.
The Pace Formula
Pace = Time ÷ Distance
Distance = Time ÷ Pace
Time = Pace × Distance
Example: Running 5K in 25 Minutes
Pace = 25 minutes ÷ 5 km = 5:00 per km (8:03 per mile)
Common Race Paces
| Distance | Target Time | Required Pace (per km) |
|---|---|---|
| 5K | 20:00 | 4:00/km |
| 5K | 25:00 | 5:00/km |
| 10K | 45:00 | 4:30/km |
| 10K | 55:00 | 5:30/km |
| Half Marathon | 1:45:00 | 4:59/km |
| Marathon | 3:30:00 | 4:59/km |
| Marathon | 4:00:00 | 5:41/km |
How to Improve Your Pace
1. Run More Miles
The safest way to improve is gradually increasing your weekly volume by no more than 10% per week.
2. Incorporate Speed Work
- Interval training: Short bursts at faster-than-race pace
- Tempo runs: Sustained effort at a comfortably hard pace
- Fartlek: Playful speed changes during a run
3. Don't Forget Recovery
Your body gets stronger during rest, not during the run itself. Easy days should be truly easy.

Our Running Pace Calculator helps you:
- Calculate pace from time and distance
- Predict race times for any distance
- Convert between min/km and min/mile
💡 Pro Tip: In a race, start slightly slower than your goal pace for the first mile/km. It's much easier to speed up gradually than to slow down after going out too fast. Negative splits (running the second half faster) are the hallmark of experienced runners.
