It's the end of the semester. Your final exam is approaching, and you're wondering: what grade do I need to get an A? Our grade calculator takes the guesswork out of final exam preparation.
The Final Grade Formula
Required Final Score = (Target Grade - Current Grade × (1 - Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight
Where:
- Current Grade = Your grade before the final (as a percentage)
- Final Weight = How much the final exam counts (e.g., 0.20 for 20%)
- Target Grade = The grade you want to achieve
Example Calculation
You currently have 85% in a class. The final exam is worth 25% of your grade. You want an A (90%):
- Step 1: 85% × (1 - 0.25) = 63.75% (current weighted grade)
- Step 2: 90% - 63.75% = 26.25%
- Step 3: 26.25% ÷ 0.25 = 105%
You need 105% on the final — which means you can't get an A with your current grade. But what about a B (80%)?
- 80% - 63.75% = 16.25% ÷ 0.25 = 65% on the final ✅
Quick Reference Table
| Current Grade | Final Worth | Needed for A (90%) | Needed for B (80%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 95% | 20% | 70% | — |
| 88% | 25% | 96% | 56% |
| 82% | 30% | 109% | 75% |
| 75% | 20% | 150% | 100% |
| 70% | 25% | 150% | 110% |
