Can a natural lifter look like a cover-model bodybuilder? The Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) is the metric researchers use to answer that question — and to spot who is probably not natural.
What Is FFMI?
FFMI measures how much muscle you carry per unit of height, stripping out body fat. It is BMI for lean mass — and unlike BMI, it directly rewards muscle.
The FFMI Formula
FFMI = Lean Body Mass (kg) ÷ Height (m)²
With an adjustment for very tall people (over 1.8 m):
Adjusted FFMI = FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − Height in m)
Worked Example
A lifter is 1.80 m, 80 kg, at 15% body fat:
- Lean mass = 80 × (1 − 0.15) = 68 kg
- FFMI = 68 ÷ 1.8² = 68 ÷ 3.24 = 21.0
Interpreting Your FFMI
| FFMI | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Under 18 | Below average muscle |
| 18–20 | Average |
| 20–22 | Above average |
| 22–24 | Athletic, well trained |
| 24–25 | Elite natural territory |
| Over 25 | Suggests enhancement |
In the landmark 1995 study by Kouri et al., most drug-free competitors capped out around 25. Values above 25 were almost exclusively found in athletes using steroids — which is why 25 is called the natural limit.
Why Height Adjustment Matters
A 1.98 m tall basketball player naturally carries more total muscle than a 1.68 m gymnast, but FFMI normalizes for height. Without the adjustment, tall athletes look artificially more muscular.
FFMI vs BMI
| Metric | What It Measures | Blind Spot |
|---|---|---|
| BMI | Weight ÷ height² | Can't tell muscle from fat |
| FFMI | Lean mass ÷ height² | Needs accurate body fat % |
A bodybuilder can have an obese-range BMI of 30 while having a healthy FFMI — because the weight is muscle, not fat.
💡 Pro Tip: Get your body fat % right — use calipers or our Body Fat Calculator with the US Navy method. An inaccurate body fat estimate throws off FFMI by a full point or more.
