Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used screening tool that estimates whether you have a healthy body weight for your height. But what does your number really mean?
What Is BMI?
BMI is a simple calculation using your height and weight:
BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m²)
In imperial units: BMI = (weight in lbs × 703) / height² (in²)
BMI Categories
| Category | BMI Range |
|---|---|
| Underweight | Below 18.5 |
| Normal weight | 18.5 – 24.9 |
| Overweight | 25.0 – 29.9 |
| Obese (Class I) | 30.0 – 34.9 |
| Obese (Class II) | 35.0 – 39.9 |
| Obese (Class III) | 40.0 and above |
Example: BMI Calculation
A person who is 175 cm (5'9") tall and weighs 70 kg (154 lbs)
- Height in meters: 1.75 m
- BMI = 70 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9 (Normal weight ✅)
What BMI Gets Right
BMI is useful because:
- It's quick and free — no lab work or special equipment needed
- It correlates reasonably with body fat percentage for most people
- Large population studies use it to track obesity trends
- Doctors use it as an initial screening tool
What BMI Gets Wrong
BMI has significant limitations:
1. Doesn't distinguish muscle from fat
An athlete with high muscle mass may have a BMI of 27 ("overweight") but very low body fat. Our Body Fat Calculator gives a more accurate picture.
2. Doesn't account for fat distribution
Where you carry fat matters. Belly fat (visceral fat) is more dangerous for health than fat in the hips and thighs.
3. Not accurate for all populations
BMI categories were developed mostly from white European populations. People of Asian, African, and other ethnicities may have different healthy ranges.
Better Metrics to Use Alongside BMI
For a more complete picture of your health, consider:
- Body Fat Percentage: Measures actual fat vs lean mass
- BMR Calculator: Know your basal metabolic rate
- Calorie Calculator: Estimate your daily energy needs
- Waist-to-hip ratio: A predictor of cardiovascular risk
💡 Remember: BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic test. It's one data point among many. Always consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
