Question 1

How do I add sales tax to a price?

Accepted Answer

Multiply the price by (1 + tax rate). A $100 item at 8% tax becomes $100 × 1.08 = $108. The calculator can also work backward to remove tax from a final total.

Question 2

How do I remove sales tax from a total?

Accepted Answer

Divide the total by (1 + tax rate). If you paid $108 at 8% tax, the pre-tax price is 108 ÷ 1.08 = $100. This is handy for expense reports and budgeting.
