Time is money — and knowing exactly how much time has passed is essential for billing, payroll, project management, and daily planning.
How to Calculate Time Duration
Duration = End Time − Start Time
The key is converting everything to a common unit (minutes or hours) before subtracting.
Example: Work Shift
Start: 9:15 AM
End: 5:30 PM
1. Convert to 24-hour: 9:15 → 17:30
2. Convert to minutes: (9×60+15) = 555, (17×60+30) = 1050
3. Subtract: 1050 − 555 = 495 minutes
4. Convert back: 495 ÷ 60 = 8 hours, 15 minutes
Common Time Calculations
| Start | End | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| 8:00 AM | 5:00 PM | 9 hours |
| 9:30 AM | 6:15 PM | 8h 45m |
| 11:00 PM | 7:00 AM | 8 hours |
| 12:00 PM | 1:30 PM | 1h 30m |
