Final exams are worth a big chunk of your grade — and the pressure is real. The good news: the math is simple, and you can know exactly what score you need before you walk in.
The Formula
Required Score = (Target Grade − Current Grade × Weight of Current Work) ÷ Weight of Final
Example
- Current average: 85% (worth 80% of the class)
- Target final grade: 90%
- Final exam worth: 20%
Required = (90 − 85 × 0.80) ÷ 0.20 = (90 − 68) ÷ 0.20 = 110% 😬
If the required score exceeds 100%, you need to raise your current average first — or accept the realistic target.
What If the Final Is a Bigger Weight?
With the final worth 40% and a current average of 70% targeting 80%:
Required = (80 − 70 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = (80 − 42) ÷ 0.40 = 95%
A high-weight final means your exam performance truly decides your grade.
