Planning a road trip or budgeting your commute? Our fuel cost calculator helps you estimate exactly how much you'll spend on gas.
The Formula
Fuel Cost = (Distance ÷ Fuel Efficiency) × Fuel Price
Example: 300-Mile Trip
- Distance: 300 miles
- Fuel efficiency: 25 MPG
- Fuel price: $3.50/gallon
- Gallons needed: 300 ÷ 25 = 12 gallons
- Total cost: 12 × $3.50 = $42.00
Fuel Efficiency by Vehicle Type
| Vehicle | Avg MPG | Cost per 100 miles |
|---|---|---|
| Hybrid | 50 MPG | $7.00 |
| Compact Car | 35 MPG | $10.00 |
| SUV | 22 MPG | $15.91 |
| Truck | 16 MPG | $21.88 |
Tips to Save on Fuel
1. Drive smoothly — Hard acceleration and braking waste fuel
2. Maintain proper tire pressure — Under-inflated tires reduce MPG
3. Remove roof racks — They create drag and reduce efficiency
4. Use cruise control — On highways, it maintains consistent speed
5. Combine trips — One longer trip uses less fuel than multiple short ones
