Value Added Tax (VAT) is one of the most common consumption taxes worldwide, used by over 160 countries. Yet many people don't fully understand how it works or how to calculate it.
What Is VAT?
VAT is a consumption tax applied at each stage of the supply chain where value is added. Unlike sales tax (which is only charged at the final point of sale), VAT is collected throughout the production and distribution process.
VAT = Output Tax − Input Tax
Where:
- Output Tax: VAT collected on sales
- Input Tax: VAT paid on purchases

How to Calculate VAT
Adding VAT (price exclusive → inclusive):
Total = Price × (1 + VAT Rate)
*Example: $100 item + 20% VAT = $100 × 1.20 = $120
Removing VAT (price inclusive → exclusive):
Net Price = Total ÷ (1 + VAT Rate)
*Example: $120 inclusive of 20% VAT = $120 ÷ 1.20 = $100
